I’m 8” long, I have a short, fairly thick bill, a white forehead. and white stripe around my red ringed eye. I have two black breast bands. I’m more handsome than other plovers, of course!

Its all about me! Hi, my name is Kane. And, no, I’ve never killed a dear! It the way my call sounds. Its a high, drawn-out "Keee" or "Kill-deer" and I signal spring long before the robins do! I’m also often the last migrant to leave in the fall. If you can hear my call, you are to close to my nest! As a baby killdeer, I came out running! I hatched with my eyes open, and as soon as my downy feathers dried, I started scurrying about, following my parents and searching the ground for something to eat. Although as a newly hatched chick I couldn’t fly, and I needed my parents for their protection and guidance, but I was a lot closer to independence than those other baby birds! In the nest my parents placed the smaller ends of the eggs pointing in so we wouldn’t roll about! I’m one of the most successful shorebirds because of my fondness for humans and my willingness to nest close to you. I’m an actor, my broken-wing act is used to lead predators from the nest would. Its rather spectacular! Thanks for getting to know me, Kane I nest at the point!
